Since I first met Rachel on that summer afternoon in 2016, she’s not only taught me as much about good writing and the writer’s life as the writers I have known who have been to Yaddo, but she also showed me that erotica could be a democratic space that celebrates the diversity of desire. Rachel Kramer Bussel is currently the editor of the  Best Women’s Erotica of the Year anthologies from Cleis Press, but she also curates, edits, writes, and promotes several other books each year. A third author came from Alaska, drove an RV, and was grateful for a husband who watched her dogs while she read her piece. Through Rachel Kramer Bussel and the authors in her anthologies, I learned not only that sex is part of the human experience, but it is something that can be embraced no matter who you are or what you like. In erotica, we are given the keys to safely explore the unknown and the familiar, all the while discovering more about who we are. Best Women’s Erotica of the Year and other anthologies gave me a permission slip I had previously been denied. It gave me permission to like what I like, no matter my shape or size or income or orientation. Setting S.M.A.R.T Goals

Every August, my family takes a trip to Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Growing up we would use the final two days of the vacation to begin school-supplies shopping on the mainland. To this day, the third week of August still smells like freshly sharpened pencils. As we got older, the trips to Walmart and Staples were replaced with a new tradition. We trace our hands on the backs of paper plates and label each finger with an avenue to focus on as fall approaches. More often than not, this exercise resulted in five dreams. Five hopes for what the fall season might bring. As we’re about to begin 2020, I am thinking about the year ahead and what I hope to achieve. With this simple lesson (adapted from my years at Salisbury Summer School), I will provide you with the tools for creating S.M.A.R.T goals. Step One: Make a list. What do you want to achieve this year? Consider all aspects of your life (school, athletics, music, etc.), and don’t be afraid to think both short-term and long-term. Write them down. Create a list. Step Two: Break it down. Select one dream from your list. We’ll focus on one at a time. Which dream stands out to you as one that you’d like to focus on right away? Which one is the most urgent or immediate? Step Three: Make it S.M.A.R.T S.M.A.R.T is an acronym to ensure that your dream doesn’t remain a dream but rather takes the form of an attainable goal. Use the following acronym to rewrite your dream as a goal. S: Specific, Simple, Significant, and Strategic Is your goal specific? How can you rewrite your goal in more precise, simple, and meaningful terms? If you wrote, â€Å"I want to do well in school,† consider homing in on one class and a specific letter-grade you’d like to achieve. Or, perhaps, you’d like to receive positive comments on your report-card; can you create a series of steps to make that possible? M: Measurable Is your goal measurable? How will you know if you are getting closer or farther away from making your goal a reality? If you want to â€Å"be a better soccer player†, can you rewrite your goal in such a way that makes that more quantifiable? Perhaps you want to practice an extra hour every week. Maybe you want to track the number of assists you make per game. A: Attainable Is your goal attainable? We are all about shooting for the stars. But let’s be sure to set ourselves up for success by creating goals that are a reach but possible. There’s nothing wrong with holding yourself to a high standard; but when we set goals that are too ambitious, we might find ourselves discouraged and therefore less likely to follow through. Be sure to set challenging yet attainable standards. R: Relevant Is your goal relevant? Make sure that your goal pertains to an aspect of your life that is important and immediate. Sure, it’s great if you want to get into graduate school, but if you’re fifteen years old, there’s plenty of time for that. What’s affecting you now? T: Time Requirement Does your goal have a time requirement? Working toward a goal is far more enjoyable and rewarding when you know how long you have to complete it. When times get tough, it’s useful to be able to remind yourself how much time you’ve put in and how much time you have left. Having a set time-frame also allows you to set up check-in points with yourself, mentors, teachers, coaches, and parents along the way to discuss your progress. Step Four: Rewrite your goal. Now that you’ve assessed if your goal is S.M.A.R.T, rewrite it in such a way that reflects its simplicity, measurability, attainability, relevance, and time-requirement. This will allow you to break your goal down into clear and fruitful steps toward making it a reality. Step Five: Repeat and thrive. Go back to your list of goals and repeat Steps 3 and 4 to create an entire list of S.M.A.R.T goals. Once you have that, you’ve got the tools to make the most out of your future plans. My last bits of advice? Share the list with people who will support your goals and hold you accountable. Hang the list in a place where you can see it daily. Not so long age, the people with learning disabilities were known as mentally retarded and they needed special medical care and attention in order to lead a normal life which has been described in the Normalisation Theory of 1980s. Learning disability can be considered to be neurological disorder which hampers and affects the logical reasoning and processing capabilities of a person. A person suffering from learning disability generally has to undergo a lot of problem in learning basic skills such as reading, writing and performing mathematical calculations. In certain cases, the learning disability can also have a detrimental impact on the higher level skills of a person such as attention, reasoning, time planning, organisation and long/ short term memory (Roulstone et al. 2011). Learning disability affects the cognitive systems in an individual and thus it reduces the perception, attention, linguistic and mathematical abilities in that person. Thus, the people suffering from learning disability often have problem in differentiating the good from the bad and thus they are more prone to criminal activities. An American psychologist named Goddard was of the opinion that the people with learning disorders could not be held accountable for their criminal behavior as they are unable to understand the consequences of their actions due to their low intelligence levels. Goddard studied the family tree of Kallikaks who were a clan of people who were considered to be mentally incompetent. They lacked the necessary intelligence to distinguish between what is considered to be good and what is considered to be wrong and thus they did not have the sufficient power of judgment to do what is considered to be ethical and righteous in their actions. Goddard has opined that alm ost half of the people languishing in prison are suffering from what he termed as feeble-mindedness and the rate of defectiveness in among individuals in different prisons varied from 28% and 89% (Emerson Hatton, 2008). People having an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of below 100 are considered to be having less than average levels of intelligence. It has been found that people with learning disabilities have had a history of offending behavior and these people have been found to have an IQ level of 85 which was way below the average IQ of the general population. In cases of people who suffer from even severe learning disabilities (people having IQ less than 50), they are not charged or held responsible for their criminal actions as the legal establishments finds them lacking the criminal intent to commit the crime in the first place. The mental condition of the people with severe learning disabilities is responsible for clouding their better judgment and thus the laws show a certain amount of leniency in handling out a strict punishment to these types of offenders by keeping in mind their mental condition. This shows us the humane side of the law and makes us realise the importance of treating these pa tients with care and sympathy rather than hatred (Sndenaa et al. 2008). Research has also suggested that people with learning disability might commit sexual offences inadvertently without their knowledge and this generally happens due to their misunderstanding about sex. The cognitive distortions occurring in their minds affect their level of thinking and they are unable to realise that their actions is totally wrong and inappropriate. Their lack of sexual knowledge is also one of the main reasons which might prevent them from realising the consequence of their actions and the life-long impact which their action is going to have on their victims. Rachel Fyson of Ann Craft Trust has found in a research that the people suffering from learning disabilities are also more likely to become victims of sexual abuse and they would also be unable to report the incidence of sexual abuse which had been undergone by them (Reynolds et al. 2010). Those individuals who have been sexually abused might abuse others in future. The cases of inappropriate sexual behavior are a very common trend in special schools which a high prevalence of rape and sodomy among the inhabitants. However, there are certain challenges which are being faced in this context as mentioned by the normalization theories. There is a fine line which exists between inappropriate sexual behavior between two consenting adults and what in legal terms is considered to be sexual abuse and this is one of the main reasons which there is underreporting of such cases. They law needs to clearly demarcate between the two and this will help in providing the necessary medical and psychological intervention which is necessary for the victims of sexual abuse (Fyson, 2009).
